Description
Kalanamak rice is a slender, deeply aromatic short-grain rice, easily recognised by its distinctive black husk. It has been grown in the Terai foothills of Uttar Pradesh for more than 2,600 years, and is often called "the Buddha's rice" — legend holds that Lord Buddha blessed the seeds of this grain during his time in the region, and the same heirloom variety has been cultivated here ever since.
Better Nutrition Kalanamak Ancient Rice Grains is sourced directly from a small number of custodian farming families who have preserved this GI-tagged heirloom variety for generations. We farm directly alongside them — with fair prices and guaranteed procurement — so what reaches you is genuine, single-origin Kalanamak rice, with its natural aroma and nutrients preserved within the grain.
Each 100 g provides around 12 g of protein, along with naturally occurring Iron (4.5 mg), Zinc (2.5 mg), Calcium (65 mg) and Vitamin A (30 µg RE). Unlike heavily milled white rice, this heirloom grain is naturally minimally processed, so it retains more of its original iron, zinc and antioxidants — along with a naturally lower glycemic index — for wholesome, easily digestible nourishment, just as nature intended.
Every batch goes through multi-stage testing to verify single-origin purity and natural mineral content, and can be traced back to the farmers who grew it — scan the QR code on the pack to meet them.
An ancient grain, grown a little differently—sourced directly from the families who have kept it alive for over 2,600 years.
TriNutrimaxx™️
Agronomic Biofortification is our farm-level technique for naturally increasing the nutritional value of crops by combining the right biofortified seed, nutrient-rich soil and precision agronomic practices through the crop cycle. Instead of adding nutrients after harvest, we work from the beginning of the farming process to help the plant access and retain higher levels of naturally occurring nutrients such as iron, zinc and protein. The approach integrates seed selection, soil and crop management, farmer protocols and testing at harvest creating, a controlled seed-to-harvest nutrition system rather than relying on fortification at the food-processing stage!
